THE TUG-WAR BETWEEN FACEBOOK AND SNAPCHAT FURTHER HEATS UP
On 09th March 2017, Facebook released a new feature for its messaging app that lets users add videos, visual effects, frames, art to photos, text, drawings, emojis, illustrated filters and even lenses to a running diary that has a life of 24 hours (it disappears after 24 hours) like they can do on Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp and Snapchat.
“Day, as its name indicates is all about your day, and it’s meant to enable you to either share context of what’s happening in your life today, or kick-start making plans with friends by letting them know what you’re up to,” wrote David Marcus, who leads Facebook Messenger in a social media post.
The new feature, called Messenger Day, might sound familiar because it’s similar to Snapchat Stories, although with a different tag name – Messenger’s Day!
This isn’t the first time that Facebook has introduced a feature that mimics its rival Snapchat. The Menlo Park tech firm also owns WhatsApp and Instagram, which showcase features like Snapchat Stories.
Being a replica of Snapchat’s interface, even the list that appears asking someone if they want to publish the post to their “day” or send it privately to a friend. Well, let me admit, Messenger Day has added their own spin to it, with its third option for someone to create custom groups of friends who can see their day.
Also, unlike on Instagram, or Snapchat for that matter, when you’re privately messaging with someone, that person’s “day” will appear atop the conversation, and photos or videos you post to the conversation will feature a button that, when clicked, will add the post to your day.
